In this third part of a series about the site templates we can use in the several SharePoint editions, we will have a look into SharePoint Server 2010 Standard. Here at first a quick overview about the parts about the site templates:

Part 1: SharePoint Foundation

Part 2: Search Server 2010 & Search Server 2010 Express

Part 3: SharePoint Server 2010 Standard

Part 4: SharePoint Server 2010 Enterprise

Part 5: Overview

SharePoint Server 2010 Standard will cost license fee, but you get some helpful functionality (user profiles, enterprise search, my sites, etc.). When you create news site collections or sites, you will see the groups “Enterprise” and “Publishing” beside the collaboration and meetings groups. The content of the groups we have seen in the first part (SharePoint Foundation) is still the same. Nothing new in these tabs. But what do we have in the enterprise and in the publishing group:

In the Enterprise group we have

  • Document Center
  • Records Center
  • Personalization Site (as subsite only)
  • Enterprise Search Center
  • My Site Host (as root web only)
  • Basic Search Center

In the Publishing group we have

  • Publishing Site
  • Publishing Site with Workflow (as subsite only)
  • Enterprise Wiki

The entry “Basic Search Center” is the same as in Search Server 2010, so we can omit this template in this article. Let’s have an overview about the new templates:

Summary

The standard edition of SharePoint Server 2010 brings some new interesting site templates. This is a result of the additional functionality provided in the standard edition. What you may see, when you are familiar with SharePoint Server 2007: there is no template for a collaboration portal or for a news site. These templates are still available, when you upgrade from SharePoint 2007, but they are hidden in the graphical user interface. But as a programmer, you may still use them. But be careful, maybe Microsoft will remove them in the next release.
