There might be situations, where we need the ID of the template, with which a list or library was created. One situation could be, when we add a JavaScript Display Template to the masterpage gallery to prepare the usage of the JS Link property in a list view web part.

When we have access to the console of the SharePoint machines, getting the template ID is easy, because we can use tools like SharePoint Manager. But when we only have our browser, this seems to be a little bit complicated. But it is very easy by using the REST interface to access the SharePoint environment.

Open the browser and enter a simple (J) address like this

http://teams.mydomain.local/sites/fieldwidth/_api/web/lists/GetByTitle('Tasks')/BaseTemplate

where we have the following “variables”:

Change the marked areas, so they match to your environment.

The result might look like this:

The value in the rectangle in the image is the template ID of the list.
