In sum we get 27 different site templates, when we use the enterprise edition of SharePoint Server 2010. Using the cost free versions SharePoint Foundation and Search Server 2010 Express, it starts very simple, but the site templates we get in these editions are useful and a good start to build powerful SharePoint applications. When we take the Server editions of SharePoint 2010 we get new and improved site templates to use the different functionality provided with these editions. So we have a good platform to build applications with the power and functionality of SharePoint 2010.

To get an overview with a short description of the site templates see the TechNet article about sites and site collections.
